Up From Slavery (1901) is an autobiography by Booker T. Washington that served as a powerful and potent voice in the battle for African-American equality and for the abolition of slavery in turn-of-the-century America. The autobiography depicts the life of the author as a slave child during the Civil War, his early struggles and education, and his success establishing of vocational schools like the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama for black people and other deprived minorities. Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was an American educator, writer, and black leader. He was born to a white slave father and a black slave mother in Virginia. Washington was freed in 1865 and became a writer and spokesman for the issues and struggles of African-Americans. Washington urged the blacks to improve themselves through education and economic advancement. He wrote several books, including the autobiography Up from Slavery (1901) and My Larger Education (1911).
